Leaders rubbish Penang CM over his open tender claims

PETALING JAYA: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has come under fire for claiming that the state practises an open tender policy.

Several leaders said Lim’s comments when delivering a speech in Melbourne recently were misleading.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said Lim had awarded certain projects without calling for an open tender.

“But he gives the impression that he is a firm believer in the open tender system,” he said, adding that Lim was a powerful chief minister who had the final say on all matters including the awarding of projects.

Dr Wee said this in response to Lim’s statement in Melbourne that Transparency International had praised the Penang Government for implementing open tenders and fighting corruption.

Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said Lim had failed to abide by his promise to implement an open tender system.

“Before Lim continues with his open tender claims, he should explain why there is no open tender for the multi-million ringgit Penang WiFi project.

“And for the Penang Mega Tunnel project that was announced earlier this year, an MoU was signed with a company from China without an open tender,” said Tan.

Tan said the DAP owed Malaysians an explanation.

Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow said it was commendable that the Pakatan Rakyat government was trying its best to promote Penang.

“But it is dangerous to over-sell. They must be honest and truthful,” he said.
